For the first time, Ray-Ban are offering a wide range of frames with authentic Ray-Ban prescription lenses featuring the Ray-Ban logo and initials for both optical and sunglasses.

Offering prescription lenses direct to the consumer opens up a whole new range of possibilities for a generation of Ray-Ban lovers to conveniently order optical frame and lens combinations or easily get a pair of prescription sunglasses in their favorite style.

For the optical customer, this means that Ray-Bans classic styles are now easily outfitted with prescription lenses that match, including the Ray-Ban detailing that is a hallmark of the brand and symbolic of its authenticity. The Ray-Ban logo is engraved in the corner of the prescription lens, outside of the visible range, just as they are on the popular sunglasses models, and companion RB initials are engraved on the left side.

Offering customized prescriptions in the wide range of high-quality lens types that Ray-Ban has become famous for is a huge advantage. Ray-Ban has been a true leader in terms of innovative sunglass technology since they first started creating lenses for pilots in 1937. Now their entire range of lenses can be custom-made with your prescription including their original grey-green lenses that preserve natural color integrity while increasing contrast and blocking glare through to their polarized lenses and their diverse range of mirrored gradient and colored lenses as well.

With so many different combinations to choose from it will now be a lot more simple and also fun to find a pair of prescription glasses from Ray-Ban that are truly yours.

We have an emotional connection with the sea, the way it ripples and swirls and the sounds as waves break melodiously against the soft sands of the beach. A soothing soundscape with a gentle rhythmic beat that is so inexorably linked with the sound of summer serves as backdrop for this feature from the beaches of Haiti.

This season’s selection contains a truly outstanding set of eyewear from brands that continue to amaze and inspire us with their constant innovation. They run the gamut from outrageous and bold to sleek and sophisticated, but what they all share is a personality that made us feel confident and powerful when we tried them on, and we are sure you will too!

SALT. RUMACK Bkok Titanium
A classic shape is given the SALT treatment, undergoing subtle tweaks to refine and update it: an earth-tone acetate outer and a tortoiseshell inner arm and temple, mixed with beta-titanium on the rims and nose guarantee that this will be an instant classic.

NAGEL ESPARTAR Oak
Nagel brings us back to nature, but in an absolutely cool new way with frames in the trendiest styles made out of purely natural materials. Wood all the way down to the hinges, joints and nose pads, these frames look and feel great. Plus their packaging is top notch with a beautifully designed and lightweight case made out of wood

RAY-BAN Remix DO YOU by 4SEE
The 4SEE editorial team had a great time playing with the nearly infinite possibilities of styles and colors available (more than 250,000 in total) from the new Remix feature for Ray-Ban sunglasses. Here are a few of our favorite creations and styles, with two models from the Justin line and the perennial classic Aviator frame. Handcrafted as always, our personal designs were ready and delivered in in just 2 days. Way to go Ray-Ban!

ØRGREEN BLUSH 701
These glasses from Ørgreen are a real sweetheart. The curvy cat eye shape in a bright blue color is sure to stand out and is totally on trend this fall. Round it all off with a trusty architecture and these frames are sure to be an instant favorite.

L.A.EYEWORKS BURBANK 542 Black Velvet
The brand really lives up to its promise of non-conformity with this pair whose sharp right angles make it appear to have been plucked right out of a cartoon. Still, the minimalism works and wearing them feels like the epitome of cool.

IC! BERLIN Customized Frames
For Ic! Berlin founder Ralph Anderl’s birthday, the Berlin-based company decided on a special surprise: to offer up one of their most popular frames, the Guenther N, for complete and total customization. We visited their flagship store to try out the process and create our own unique sunglasses from individual parts that offer a reported 9,127,891,353,600 combinations! There is a stunning violet frame with gold accent hinges, or for a split personality you could really mix things up with completely different lenses, hinges, temples, temple covers and nosed pads on each side.

Since opening his first boutique in 1994, Steven Alan has been catering to urban, city-dwelling customers with his timeless, understated aesthetics. Launched in 2013, his eyewear collection is an addition to his ready-to-wear line and aims to fill a gap he saw in the market for eyewear which he calls neither ¨over-designed nor too boring¨ and without being ¨exorbitantly priced.¨

steven_001

His popular styles include the Italian acetate frames in tortoise shell, and for the upcoming season, more round styles and metal frames are being developed following on the popularity of the Bryce. As for his personal favorite, it’s the Malcolm in Charcoal Crystal acetate.

The online shop features a 3D Virtual Try-On, which maps over 900 facial points to create a representation of how the glasses will look. Developed in partnership with Ditto, the innovator behind this technology, Steven Alan Optical is the first US brand to incorporate it.

For a look that works, he advises creating a contrast not only in the shape (i.e. square frames for a round face), but also through exploring a different style from the clothing one wears to attract attention to the eyes: ¨The more eye contact you can attract from your audience, the more confidence you will feel.¨

Despite their vast difference in design aesthetics, eyeglass brands Coblens, Ray-Ban, Carrera and Robert Rüdger share the same secret to success: to be an original, you have to create your own path. You have to be real; you have to be you. Take a look with 4SEE and learn how these brands’ individual visions transformed them into contemporary legends.

REINVENTING ROBERT RÜDGER.

In 1989, established Austrian designers Robert Hüttmann, Rudi Himmelfreundpointner and Gerhard Lahner felt the call for change in their creative lives and the eyewear industry. They created the ROBERT RÜDGER brand – the first brand of eyewear frames made completely in Austria. At the time, what they did was nothing short of disruptive, particularly for the German, Swiss and Dutch markets.

The brand was taken over by Rudi Himmelfreundpointner in 2004 and re-launched in 2015 with renowned Italian eyewear manufacturer Area98 and its art director and marketing manager, Elisio Tessaro. Heritage and innovation are at the heart of the Robert Rüdger story today as much as they were when it was founded, and we see this clearly with the 2016 collection’s warm tones and clean lines which give a timeless and lasting impression.

The elegant, panto-shaped RR023 model is accented by a keyhole bridge and constructed with wood temples and a horn frame front. Intellectual meets vintage in the limited edition RV027 sunglasses. Perfectly round horn rims are joined by titanium temples and spring bridge, which results in a style that embodies bohemian sophistication.

Robert Rüdger’s masterful use of raw materials like horn, wood, titanium, and, for the first time ever, carbon fiber, serve as a fine complement to the classic, yet modern and confident man whom the brand attracts.

MATERIAL MATTERS – LOZZA EYEWEAR

It’s good once in a while to indulge the material girl or boy in each of us, and what better way than with eyeglasses? Different materials have different unique strengths and features, such as durability, lightness, not to mention material beauty, so it’s important to choose a manufacturer or designer well-versed in the craft. From cool titanium, to dazzling diamonds, to understated wood and acetate, 4SEE dedicates this issue to material components and the brands that beautifully give them homage.

Lozza_story01

For an Italian eyewear company that’s been around since 1878, there’s certainly nothing stuffy or old fashioned about LOZZA EYEWEAR. LOZZA unabashedly wears its Italian heritage and tradition on its sleeve and takes the “Made in Italy” credo to a level all its own. While the brand is known for its elegantly refined, classic look, the Zilo frame is arguably the style that put LOZZA on the map and on the faces of many a hipster the world over.

Lozza_Story03

While the Zilo first appeared in the 70’s, don’t be too quick to call it a comeback: the Zilo’s been here for years, and it’s here to stay. Round, with slightly aviator-style acetate frames accented by a double nose bridge lends a vintage look and unmistakably sporty touch.

The Zilo style comes in various iterations in both sunglasses and ophthalmic versions with a wide variety of colors made from high-quality processed acetate. Its exclusive production process ensures that the frames are extremely lightweight and, though relatively thin, can maintain their strength while exhibiting great flexibility. Added plus? Because the frames are made from acetate, they’re hypoallergenic.

Fashion powerhouse PRADA is known to always be on trend, with their fingers firmly on the pulse of contemporary design and experimental materials. The PRADA RAW Special Collection is no exception to this, as black walnut wood and Malabar ebony take on large, structured silhouettes rife with vintage touches. The result is nothing short of elegant. Masterful craftsmanship transforms the two types of precious wood into unique frames, as great care is taken when sanding and polishing the wood to preserve the natural irregularity of the wood’s veining. The SPR 26R model is made entirely from black walnut wood. A brushed metal bridge and hand-applied topstitched natural or black leather embellishments complete the catwalk-ready frame. The SPR 30 square front model, available in black walnut or Malabar ebony, is perfectly accented with acetate temples in classic tortoise shades of matte, medium, ivory, and sand-dark chocolate. The SPR 27R model takes on the iconic Minimal-Baroque design in black walnut and Malabar ebony fronts. The temples feature the signature Baroque-style acetate curls and are available in various shades of tortoise, with the Prada lettering logo subtly engraved on the arm of the frame.

Twin Sisters Coco and Breezy boldly proclaim that “eyewear is always your outfit”

Coco was a couple of minutes late for our Skype interview, until she realized she was actually on Breezy’s account. She says this happens quite a lot since the twin sisters shared a single telephone and computer, with a joint e-mail account, until relatively recently.

Despite the obvious similarities, the sisters have discovered their individual strengths and struck a balance between being best friends and business partners. Breezy is creative and outspoken and takes care of most of the design process, while Coco, with her attention to detail and way with words, handles the business side of things.

Coco and Breezy started collecting vintage frames as teenagers as a way to ward off bullies. The glasses they wore offered a sense of security and eventually this notion became the basis for their brand which they launched in 2009 after moving to New York. From their home in Brooklyn, you can catch the pair enjoying a ride around the neighborhood on their matching bikes, but Coco will proudly let you in on a little secret, she rides a fixie, while her sister’s is free.

Today, Coco and Breezy, the brand they named after themselves, incorporates their distinctive styles and passion for geometry, art, and making a statement, and most of all, epitomizes their shared perspective that “eyewear is the outfit” and the rest of the clothing sort of falls into place after that.

This season’s selection combine signature styles with unusual and invigorating materials to reimagine sunglasses of all shapes and styles. Leather, wood, all sorts of acetate finishes, and luxurious gold and gemstones are just some of the unconventional materials that innovative brands are using to create the trendy and timeless top picks that will be immortalized in our eyewear archive.

eyewear.archive_bartonBARTON PERREIRA BETTY Metal Brushed Gold
Betty, combines an attractive frame with a lustrous color formed from a light and durable titanium core and coated acetate finish in matte teak, but what really catches our eye on these Japanese-manufactured frames is the attention to detail – all the way down to the cross-hatching on the inside temples.

More and more people prefer customized and hand-made goods over mass-marketed products. 4SEE visited this german eyewear manufacturer that is committed to handcraft, high quality, individuality and modern design. Mykita from Berlin combines technical perfection with a solid sense for aesthetics.

Mykita produces in Berlin – so everything is close by. “Which is why we can access our resources swiftly and directly and reflect the zeitgeist in our products“, says CEO and Creative Director Moritz Krueger. And the Berliners do so perfectly: Whether it is Lady Gaga, Brad Pitt or Wolfgang Joop – everyone who deems themselves fashion-savvy wears Mykita. All this works without a logo, because Mykita uses a patented flexible joint unique to their glasses.

mykita_Story_01

The atmosphere inside the Mykita House in Berlin-Kreuzberg is as creative as in an artist’s studio. The combined competence of employees from 28 different nations is put to good use for design and production, all under one roof. “We produce up to 3000 prototypes each year“, Moritz Krueger explains. “During development we always take the past, the future and new technologies into account. When tried and tested methods meet modern techniques, traditional production meets modern materials, innovation evolves from it.“ Mykita’s secret to its modern manufactory is the combination of handicraft and high-tech: “Our designs are always based on technical solutions, which have to be highly aesthetic at the same time.“

Mykita_Story03

Mykita’s famous first collection, Collection No. 1, consists of delicate stainless steel. Fronts and temples are etched into just 0.5mm thick flat metal during a photochemical procedure. All components are developed in plane and are put into shape by bending and folding, similar to Japanese origami. The Berliners’ newest idea is Mylon – glasses made by laser-sintering polyamide powder, an additive technique akin to 3D-printing. Layer by layer lightweight and break-proof glasses are formed, fit even for sports or skiing.

Mykita_Story04

But Mykita looks to expand its horizon. “The Mykita House doesn’t end in Berlin, it invites partners from all industries“, says Krueger. “We develop modern, contemporary products in an interdisciplinary dialogue.“ Mykita looks for collaborations with outside partners for the colouring of their frames and lenses, too. Designer Bernhard Wilhelm inspired the famous gold-mirrored aviator frame; Damir Doma used glasses as a canvas for a mesmerizing play of colours such as blue, violet and brown. For summer, the label came up with matte surfaces and uses mainly Black, Navy, Chocolate Brown and Gold for optical glasses. Sunglasses are more playful: Colour gradients, mirrored lenses and bold colours characterize the collection.
Mykita stands out from the crowd through their unique shapes and colours, and more and more customers are convinced by their quality and designs. “In 2015 we want to open more Mykita stores and in March we will launch our first children collection, Mykita First“, the CEO reveals.

This season’s must-have frames are all about colors, patterns, and bold shapes. Our favorite frames from Alain Mikli, Boss, Fendi, Oliver Peoples and Rolf Spectacles, are ornamented by the multitalented illustrator and art director Hara Katsiki. Her many past lives include roles both in front of and behind the camera (and computer). She seems wise beyond her years. How did she accomplish this remarkable feat?

Hara is a motion addict. Her petite frame and gentle personality belie her bold and daring character that has taken her on numerous adventures with great success. She says she gets bored easily and so she always wants to try new things and move beyond the conventional. This becomes clear when you look at her personal art and illustration projects. And that’s why 4SEE thinks she is a perfect compliment for the Spring/Summer issue about Color.

Hara hails from Greece and began her career as a model before pursuing roles as a stylist and visual merchandiser, but her insatiable appetite for creative control wasn’t satisfied in these positions. So, she spent some time working in a small graphic design agency. From here, she skyrocketed to further success after receiving numerous awards for her independent illustration style. Then, her wanderlust returned and she moved on to a whole new city to fuel her creative fires.

These days, Hara calls Berlin home, and since moving here six years ago she has gained a reputation for her artistry in illustration and art direction as well as becoming a highly sought-after DJ for industry and fashion events. Her sounds are similar to her art in that they combine a joie de vivre and whimsy with an eclectic and colorful approach that ultimately inspires happiness and confidence.

Hara adorns the cover editorial shot by Bert Spangemacher with pops of bright colors such as reds and pinks and light, iridescent blues to the images. These bright colors signify for her the rebirth and revival caused by the turn of the season. “There is a season that calls man to pause amid the clamor of noise, the busy agitation of life and invites him to wonder. It is Spring, which is a symbol of the renewal of life and of hope for the future.” This seems to makes sense for someone like Hara who is clearly always looking to the future with eager anticipation of the next great creative project.

RAY-BAN
Never has a brand epitomized the culture of cool like RAY-BAN. The brand rallies everyone from the well heeled to those who live on the edge and everyone in between to embrace their inner rebel with their slogan, “Never Hide.” Synonymous with individuality and authenticity, RAY-BAN advocates that nothing is more fashionable than to be yourself. Like the brand itself, the RAY-BAN Wayfarer really needs no introduction. From Her Royal Highness, the Duchess Kate Middleton to Madonna, from James Dean to Jay-Z, this timeless classic’s widespread appeal is as legendary as the faces it graced. And now, Wayfarer fans can rejoice: available as prescription glasses, the Wayfarer LITEFORCE OPTICS offer the same appeal as their original counterpart and look as good on in the boardroom as they do while playing billiards. The frames are made with Liteforce – a thermoplastic often used in the aerospace industry for its incredible lightness and durability. When we tried them on, their feather-light feel blew us away. 4SEE noticed moderate updates to the classic design, such as a sleeker frame and a faintly softer eye shape. Wayfarer Liteforce Optics are available in opaque grey, black, petroleum blue and purple.

Who doesn’t like seeing the world through rose-colored glasses? Tinted shades in colorful hues give faces an effortless, fresh glow. The Color Capsule collection from Gucci presents lightweight models that come in an intricate array of colors. The elegantly oversized Classic Aviator Collection from Victoria Beckham is an inspired set of glasses, recognizable by their glossy black frames and dark-mirrored lenses. A significant eyewear trend of the moment, we should note, however, that some tints could affect the perception of certain colors.

The classic shades such as gray, brown and green provide the highest UV protection and affect color perception the least. Traffic signs, signals and landscapes are rich in contrast and clearly visible to the eye. Blue tinted shades, however, are rather unsuitable for driving, as the blue color distorts the essential colors too much. Road signs and safety vests, if looked upon through orange shades, lose luminosity and are easily overlooked. Yellow tints have a contrast-enhancing effect at night, but shouldn’t be worn during the day, as they provide only a very little protection from UV light. Darker shades like orange and tanned glasses are good in green surroundings. They enhance the 3D effect and also optimize contrast in overcast skies and foggy conditions. Along with a high degree of UV protection, sunglasses should also be equipped with a blue light blockerbecause out of the full color spectrum of light blue light is the most damaging to the eyes.
